"Can I go inside your heart?"

That single question delivered with a smile that's just one degree too wide is the line that's going to haunt viewers long after the credits roll on Other Mommy. The film opens this Friday, October 9, and based on everything we know, it might be the most unsettling horror experience of the year.

What It's About

Eight year old Bela lives in a house where things have been quietly falling apart. Her parents Ursula and Russ are navigating a marriage in crisis, and a child caught in the middle learns to survive by making herself invisible.

Then something comes out of the closet.

It looks exactly like her mother. It talks like her. It smiles like her. But it wants something no real parent would ever ask for: to be let inside Bela's heart. And it is patient. Relentlessly, terrifyingly patient.

Directed by Rob Savage — the filmmaker behind Host and The Boogeyman — Other Mommy is adapted from the 2024 novel Incidents Around the House by Josh Malerman, the author of Bird Box. If you've read the book, you know what's coming. If you haven't, you're in for something special.

Why This One Is Different

Horror is full of movies about things that go bump in the night. Other Mommy is about something far more personal: the terror of watching the person who is supposed to protect you become the thing you fear most.

Jessica Chastain plays both Ursula and the entity the real mother and the Other Mommy and the choice to cast one actress in both roles is deliberate and inspired. The film forces you to feel the same confusion Bela feels. You're never quite sure which one you're watching. And that ambiguity is where the real dread lives.

Rob Savage built his reputation making horror that gets under your skin without relying on cheap tactics. Host did it in 57 minutes on Zoom. The Boogeyman did it in a suburban house. Here, he has Jessica Chastain, Blumhouse's resources and a source novel built for exactly this kind of slow burn psychological horror.

The result, from everything we've seen in the trailers, looks like a film that earns its scares.

What to Look Forward To

Beyond the obvious hook Jessica Chastain playing herself against herself there are a few things that make this worth tracking closely.

Josh Malerman. His novel Bird Box became one of the defining horror stories of the last decade. Incidents Around the House is his latest, and Malerman has a specific gift: he writes monsters that work because they exploit things you already fear. The Other Mommy isn't a demon or a monster in the traditional sense. It's the warmth and trust of a parent, corrupted.

Rob Savage's restraint. The Boogeyman proved Savage can work within a studio system and still make something genuinely creepy. He builds dread through character before he builds it through visuals. Expect Other Mommy to follow the same pattern and then break it at exactly the right moment.

The dual performance. Chastain differentiates the two characters subtly, the film reportedly giving Ursula glasses as the primary visual cue. But the real difference is behavioral the Other Mommy is too loving, too attentive, too present. It mirrors the fantasy of a perfect parent until the fantasy cracks.

Our Take: This Is the Horror Film of October

At What If Visions, we've been following Other Mommy since it was first announced. The original May release date was pushed to October — and honestly, that's the right move. This is a film built for dark theaters, falling leaves and that specific October feeling that the horror genre exists to amplify.

The competition in theaters this month is real, but Other Mommy has something most horror films don't: a real emotional core. Bela isn't just a victim. She's a kid trying to figure out which version of her mother to trust and that story resonates in a way that transcends the genre.

We'll have a full review after opening weekend. Until then, clear your Friday night.

Your mommy won't save you.

In theaters October 9. Directed by Rob Savage. From Blumhouse, Atomic Monster and Universal Pictures, based on the novel Incidents Around the House by Josh Malerman.
